ASSU STRIKE: Branches vote to continue strike

The end of the three month strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, seems not in view as negative fillers are filtering out from the nationwide referendum conducted by the chapters of the union to decide on whether to suspend the strike or not. In adherence to the directive of the national leadership of the union on Monday, chapters of the union in the public universities nationwide on Tuesday conducted a referendum to decide on whether to suspend the ongoing 3-month strike or not. The national leadership of the Union had directed its Zonal coordinators to meet with their Branch chairpersons to conduct the referendum on the offers of government and feed it back. It was gathered that over 200 members of the University of Ibadan, UI, chapter of the Union who attended the congress voted for the continuation of the strike while a little above 50 voted for its suspension with conditions. ASUU resorts to referendum as strike continues Following the inability of stakeholders in the education sector to resolve the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the association on Tuesday, February 5, conducted a nationwide referendum. The referendum, McCozar blogspot learn, was to decide whether to suspend the industrial action which has crippled activities in the nation’s universities for three months or to continue until the federal government meets the demands of the lecturers reports that the referendum was organized by the national leadership of the union which directed its coordinators at the zones to meet with their various chairmen over the action. FG:WE ARE NOT READY TO MEET ASUU DEMANDS,ASK THEM TO BULGE OR FORGET IT The strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU seem to have no end in sight, as meeting between the striking university lecturers and the Federal Government on Friday was deadlocked. Senator Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment while addressing newsmen after a closed-door meeting with the union in Abuja said the meeting was protracted. He said, “The meeting was protracted, but the good news is that we have gotten to the end of the tunnel. We met them halfway and we have finished the gray areas and on the issue of N50 billion, we have offered what we have. We do not have N50 billion and we cannot do N50 billion, but we have offered them something reasonable. So they have to take it back, and go and present to their members”. Ngige, however, expressed hope that students would return to school soon, saying “We will know when they will go back by Thursday”. ...

ASUU ADJOURNED TILL NEXT WEEK The meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has been adjourned till Thursday (February 7, 2019). Today’s meeting makes it the 9th time the striking lecturers are meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige to resolve the industrial action which has lingered for almost three months. The lecturers proceeded on strike on November 4, 2018, in protest of what they described as poor welfare, university revitalization among other demands. Speaking to journalists at the end of the meeting, the labour minister as well as the ASUU President noted that they are making progress. Both parties, however, refused to give any specific details, stating that the press will be briefed after next Thursday’s meeting

ASSU STRIKE : Nigeria government, lecturers hold emergency meeting

The federal government on Friday resumed talks with the leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the ongoing strike in public universities across the country. The lecturers embarked on an indefinite strike on November 4, demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government. The meeting, currently holding at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja, is not the first since the beginning of the strike. Prior to Friday’s meeting, at least eight other meetings held between both parties. Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES earlier this week, the national president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi, said the leadership of ASUU was still consulting with its members.
